Chinese cultural exports is becoming a prominent phenomenon

By Amelia Repke

Chinese cultural exports is presenting in a new manner, which is digital cultural products. Related data shows that the total amount of cultural trade in China in 2024 reached 1.4 trillion yuan, of which digital cultural products (games, online audio-visual) account for 25.8%, about 370 billion yuan, with a growth rate far exceeding traditional trade.

Chinese self-developed games generated overseas sales revenue of 9.5 billion US dollars in the first half of 2025, setting a new five-year high with a growth rate of 11%, sparking a "Chinese style" worldwide.

Among the digital cultural products, Tencent-backed Game Science launched China’s first global top-tier video game, “Black Myth: Wukong,” which sold more than 10 million units in three days, successfully set the benchmark for the export of Chinese culture.

The latest Chinese homegrown game that draws attention of overseas players significantly is "Where Winds Meet". More than 2 million people played the martial arts video game within 24 hours of its overseas release this past weekend on PlayStation and PC, according to the game’s Chinese publisher NetEase. The free-to-play game puts a player in the shoes of a “young sword master” living in 10th-century China, whose backstory is developed through the journey of play.

Meanwhile, Mobile-based “Honor of Kings” last month claimed an average of 139 million daily players in China, with 260 million monthly active players worldwide. The game rolled out last year to the Middle East, North America, Europe and Japan. This year’s “Honor of Kings” live China championship not only nearly doubled its attendance from last year, but set a Guinness World Record with 62,000 attendees in Beijing’s Bird’s Nest stadium.

On the flip side, film and animation is another driving force of Chinese cultural exports. "Nezha2" set a global box office record, topped the animated film charts, and was screened on the New York Times Square billboard.

It is obvious that Chinese cultural exports is becoming a prominent phenomenon in recent years, and the communication patten is shifting from a single product output toward a comprehensive model of "digital content +IP operation +technical services", which makes Chinese traditional culture refresh.
